Lonely Leaves
Every photographer has an inexplicable urge: some subject to which he is drawn. Mine is lonely leaves -- on a rocky path, hanging from a tree in winter, floating in a stream, or anywhere else. Lonely leaves share much in common with abandoned mine ruins and desolate landscapes: a sense of loss, emptiness, and decay, but also tenacity and strength to endure.

To order a print
Click the photo you would like, and choose "Add to Cart" in the upper right portion of the page.

Ruins

Copper Country Ruins
Centuries ago, European explorers found pure masses of copper literally sitting around on the ground in Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula. A huge copper mining industry grew, becoming the United States' first major mining region, even before California's Gold Rush. But by the end of the 1960s, every mine had closed, leaving only decaying buildings and ruins behind. Nowadays, few buildings remain, and nature has reclaimed many old mining sites. It's an almost daily occurrence to come across an old rock foundation or a barely marked shaft while wandering through the woods.

My adventures
Exploring Copper Country ruins is one of my favorite pastimes. Ruins evoke a feeling of starkness, and a past which has been lost -- leaving the Keweenaw with no clear direction. I try to evoke this same feeling with my photos.

To order a print
Click the photo you would like, and choose "Add to Cart" in the upper right portion of the page.

Upper Peninsula Waterfalls
All but one of Michigan's named waterfalls are in the Upper Peninsula, and many of those are located in or near the Keweenaw Peninsula. The landscape is so rugged that almost every stream and creek has a small waterfall hidden on it somewhere -- many of which are known only to locals and explorers.

My Explorations
Waterfalls fascinate me. Finding a hidden waterfall deep in the woods evokes a feeling of true exploration -- finding something nobody has ever seen before. Many waterfalls featured here are far off the beaten track, found by chance or word of mouth.

To order a print
Click the photo you would like, and choose "Add to Cart" in the upper right portion of the page.

The Wild Keweenaw
The Keweenaw contains a huge variety of terrain: tall cliffs, flat plains, ravines, rivers, lakes, and plains. With the last copper mine closing more than 40 years ago, the land has largely been left to regrow. We are now surrounded by beautiful sights in every direction, and in every season.

My Explorations
Rare is the weekend you won't find me outdoors: hiking, biking, snowshoeing, or finding any other way to enjoy our beautiful land.
Winter

Winter in the North
Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula is almost an island in the middle of Lake Superior. The Great Lake has a hand in many aspects of our lives, and most importantly our weather. The lake keeps us moderate in summer, but in winter the warmer waters feed enormous lake-effect snow storms which dump an average of over 200 inches of snow between October and April.

My Explorations
The Keweenaw's empty wildernesses provide a perfect place to wander about on snowshoes. It's possible to find yourself standing under towering pines, standing on snow totally untouched by humans, covered only with trees and drifts of blown snow. Winter brings out colors and shapes hard to find in summer, and emphasizes beautiful lines and colors.

To order a print
Click the photo you would like, and choose "Add to Cart" in the upper right portion of the page.
